MENTORS & MENTEES’ TESTIMONIALS

PROTEGE

I am indeed grateful and thankful to the student mentoring scheme. I really testify that being mentored by my mentor “MARTHA AUGUSTINE” has indeed been very helpful to me as she always put me through academically not just that but also in personal life as a sister and a mother in school who I can always run to. I can really say that my first semester result was really amazing all thanks to her as my mentor and the school for providing the student mentoring scheme. I am indeed grateful to the school for organizing a scheme like this. I pray it continues like this so that this newly admitted 100L can also benefit from it and it will also help them know the reason and essence of coming to this great “UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA

My Report About the Mentoring Scheme The mentoring scheme was really helpful to me. It brought to my knowledge many things I didn’t know. Thanks to my mentor, I’ve been exposed to opportunities in the school that can help me as a student both financially and academically. Another significant thing I’ve gained from this scheme is that my mentor made me to understand that there are ways to help myself and my parents with the school expenses through application for scholarships and being a student worker. I must say, this mentoring scheme is like a pacesetter for new students. In conclusion, I would like to thank the current Vice Chancellor for bringing such scheme because it has been helpful.

I believe this scheme will also help a lot of other students like me.

 Thank you.

This opportunity has opened me to learnings that has given me a hedge over every other student not involved in this scheme. The working ethics, standard, behaviour and many others that I can mention but a few. For one is the opportunity of being a mentor. It’s quite demanding but I feel happy making someone life easier, helping them avoid the mistakes have made and even impacting them. The way they listen to me and adhere to my advice makes me feel like a good leader in making. My communication skills have improved; my emotional intelligence has also improved. My name is Onyinye Mkpuluma Amaka, a final year student in Sociology Department of the University of Abuja and also a worker in the Students Employment Scheme (SES) which is a program that was established by the University management for students to develop their independent skills and also assist them financially with a descriptive outline of schedule of duties for each student employee. I was however granted the opportunity to be part of this scheme on the 19th of July, 2021. The Student Mentoring Scheme was incorporated under the umbrella of SES as at the same time the SES was established. With the aim to broaden the abilities of student workers/mentors and mentees in developing themselves. I am honoured to be part of this scheme and privileged to mentor our 100 level students which has allowed me acquire the necessary abilities like effective communication, listening and coaching skills. It encompasses great unique skills that have helped me to influence, direct and guide the Mentee by reinforcing my knowledge and enhancing my capabilities. I was also able to assist the mentees in their academic areas which they found difficult to understand. They were introduced to the SES program and advised to enroll. We have organized meetings both virtual and otherwise were issues and challenges of each Mentee were discussed and solutions were proffered. They were also briefed on how the SES program works, the criterion, the benefits, impacts, and opportunities they will achieve as student workers. It is a great delight that they gave every talk a listening ear and it is also a greater delight because they adhered to it. They improved on their social skills, educational skills, interpersonal skills and effective reading and writing skills. Finally, most of them have developed interest in participating in SES.

I am grateful to be part and parcel of this scheme and hope to impact more lives for efficient service delivery in our society.
